AMBASSADOR AWARD - WINNER

LANGDALE, BRAMPTON, BY MARY ARNOLD-FORSTER ARCHITECTS

From the Architect:

The house replaced a stable/workshop constructed in the 1960’s which had fallen into disrepair. Through the placement on the site, the overall massing, the shallow pitched roof, the external materials and expressed roof trusses the design gives reference to this agricultural structure preserving its memory.

The house nestles into the very steep existing slope so that it is single storey to the street but two stories to the view of the rolling landscape.

Three single storey blank gables face the road denying the view, with a glazed link between volumes indicating the entrance by framing part of the view. The larch cladding runs from the exterior through into the interior lining the link so that it feels like an external covered space separating the two main volumes.
