ADAPTIVE REUSE IDEAS COMPETITION
The Dundee Institute of Architects is pleased to announce the DIA Young Architects and Designers Competition, an architectural ideas competition for new architects, architectural designs and architecture students within the DIA area.
The competition brief is to help facilitate young architects and designers to share their ideas for the future of the architectural fabric of Tayside and Fife.
Context for the Brief
Recent discourse within the architectural profession has become more focussed on the retention of existing buildings and their embodied energy, notably around the proposed demolition of the M&S Oxford Street flagship store and and the Cumbernauld Town Centre. As architects, the topic of retrofit, renovation and repair are becoming more central to the work we do, and the impact our work has on our planet.
According to the IEA’s Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, the buildings and construction sector accounted for 39% of energy and process-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in 2018, 11% of which resulted from manufacturing building materials.
In addition to retrofitting existing buildings and reducing heat loss during the life cycle of a building, we are being asked to look at our existing building stock in order to retain it for future use. Rather than adding to increasing CO2 emissions by demolishing and building new, how can we creatively adapt, restore and renovate the existing building fabric of our towns and cities to minimise the impact of the construction process on the environment.
"The greenest building is the one that is already built,” Carl Elefante (2007)
Competition Brief
Adaptive Reuse
Select a derelict or underused building that you deem suitable for adaptive reuse and create a proposal that aims to tackle this and bring new life into the building.
The Building
the building you select must be within the catchment of the DIA; Dundee, Angus, North Fife, Perthshire, and it can be located in an urban, suburban or rural setting.
It could be a recently vacant building, an underused and in need of repair, or a completely derelict building. A building that is predominantly occupied and used will not be deemed suitable, unless there is a current real life proposal to demolish it.
Idea for Adaptive Reuse
Consider the suitability for your reuse proposal within the existing context and community
Define why there is a need for such a proposal in that particular context. Who is it serving?
If the building is currently partially used, how is this use factored in to your proposal?
Consider whether your proposal is temporary or permanent. If temporary or for interim use, how long does it exist for and how does it leave the building afterwards. Consider the future if proposing a permanent reuse. How will the building function in 50 years time.
